A PICNIC IN THE LATE 1940s AND 1960s

JULIE MARTIN

Interviewed March 1992 by Criena Fitzgerald. p.31.

CF When the children were younger did you go out on picnics with the children?  What food would you have taken then?

MARTIN Well, pretty much the same as what my mother did: sandwiches, or I'd make a pastie slab and make a slab of cake or whatever.  We used to do that a lot with the neighbours too.  A group of us were friendly and all with children of the same ages and we would go on picnics down to the river and we would all contribute to either fruit or drink or sandwiches or cakes, and picnic as a group.
