  1. Aranda is a warrior man or spirit that belongs to central Australian Aboriginal groups. Why do you think it was important to have belief in a protective warrior? Do other cultures have similar beliefs?

  1. There are many different Aboriginal language groups across Australia. Every group is unique however the concept of a warrior man or spirit is common to many groups. Research an Aboriginal group and see if you can find a similar figure to Aranda. What is it called? What is the story connected to him? OI:4, OI:7

Did You Know

  1. Aboriginal people were subject to numerous laws which were different in every state. Many of these laws remained in place until 1967 when a Referendum was held to alter the Australian Constitution. This remains the only Referendum that was successfully passed. Prior to this Aboriginal people’s lives were controlled by state government departments and most had to apply for permission before they could do many of the things that we take for granted. These included: to marry, be in the city after 6pm and to visit relatives (i.e. travel away from home).

  1. Research the beginning of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972. What were the Aboriginal People trying to achieve? Were they successful? What has happened to the Tent Embassy since this time?
