Sportswear

Sport  played a major part in Western Australian society during the twentieth century. It was a key communal activity. The following snapshots show a selection of a number of sports and the clothing their participants wore to play them. Not only do they reflect an interesting sample of changing fashions, but they also reflect important themes such as the changing role of women in Western Australian society.

The following images of girls participating in gymnastics and callisthenics in restrictive clothing reflects the restricted nature of their upbringing.
The participation of women in sport, and, as the century progressed, the increasing freedom new fashions gave their bodies to allow greater movement and athleticism, is an indicator of their improved opportunites for participation in society in general.
