Join the State Library and the Minderoo Foundation in exploring John Forrest’s 1874 trek and unpack the meaning of such concepts as ‘exploration’, ‘colonisation’ and ‘Country’

Centred on Aboriginal peoples’ experiences, From Another View re-frames John Forrest’s 1874 exploratory trek and its enduring legacy in Western Australia. From a Traditional Owners’ perspective, how can you explore something that is already known and has been known for thousands of years?

Like many colonial explorers, John Forrest believed that the interior of Western Australia and South Australia was ‘unknown’. This colonial view led John Forrest to undertake numerous exploratory journeys. His 1874 trek from Geraldton to Adelaide to locate the ‘watershed’ of the Murchison River, is the focus of an educational program and three exhibitions between May and July 2019.
